To Prevent a Catastrophe........Re: Engine Noise Posted by Herb Hirsch [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Engine Noise, youngbob, Sat, 18 Jun 2005 18:02:36 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I recommend the following as safety measures in the event that it is either the cam drive chain or a serpentine belt pulley. Minimize driving....avoid completely.
1) Serpentine belt failure: if the pulley fails completely you will see the alternator light AND the steering will get very heavy; pull over, shut down and get a tow. If you keep driving the engine will overheat and you could warp the heads....repairs could run $3,000. If you get the car to a repair facility first you are probably looking at $300-$400. Make sure that you replace ALL pulleys, and that you use the new short belt (1 less pulley) procedure.
2) Cam drive chain failure: This failure is much more exciting. It is sudden and catastrophic. The car will stop immediately in the middle of the road. You will be towed. You will have bent valves; replacement of the head will be required. Costs could run $3,000 or more.
CONCLUSION: Don't drive the car until you get a diagnosis. The cost of damage is very high. Obviously, there are other possibilities....my thoughts are based upon two not-unlikely causes.
