Re: 2005 SAAB 9-5 Arc Sedan
Does anyone know if the octane ratings are different between the US and Canada? Is the AON an america Octane standard? Is a 91 octane in Canada the same as a 92-94 in the US?
The reason I ask is that Saab recommends 92-93 octane but it is difficult to find gasoline beyond a 91 rating at the pumps here in Ontario. Sunoco 94 is what I've started using but Sunoco stations are not as common as others.
My 93 9000 CSE loved Shell 91 when the turbo was working. Have not tried it yet with the 2005 (Only had it 2 weeks)
See the quotes below.
From Saab Canada:
"Recommended fuel unleaded 92-93 octane"

From Saabusa:
Fuel Requirement Unleaded 87-93 AON unleaded 92-93 AON recommended

(From the Shell Canada Website)
"Technically there are three different "octane numbers" associated with every gasoline. The Research Octane Number, or RON, is measured under fairly easy test conditions. The Motor Octane Number, or MON, is a tougher test measured at higher engine speed and temperature.
The value that relates most closely to actual driving conditions is the average of these two values: Road Octane Number = (RON + MON)/2. This Road Octane value is the one referred to in Shell stations: Shell Bronze gasoline has an octane rating of 87, Shell Silver is 89 and Shell V-Power is 91. Occasionally, less scrupulous Canadian gasoline outlets will use the confusion of these different octane measurements to exaggerate their octane rating claims, by advertising their fuel's Research Octane Number - which will be higher than the Road Octane Number."
