Who better to opine, than I, the current happy owner of a 2000 Saab 9-5 sedan, and lessee of a 2004 Audi allroad quattro wagon?
Got the Saab used as lease return at 3 years old, 37,000 miles. At $15,900 it was a bargain for a late model "premium" car. My wife and I both like it, for what it is. (2.3t, auto, premium package w/prestige HK audio, black on black).
Audi allroad is a more expensive vehicle. We both like it, for what it is. (2.7 v6 biturbo, triptronic, premium package, top Bose audio w/sirius satellite, old style navi, silver on charcoal).
Going forward in time, you will be comparing a 9-5 wagon fwd, to either A6 or A4 quattro avants. The 9-5 is about the same size as the new A6 avant-in dealers soon, but the 9-5 is probably closer to the price of the A4 avant.
Audi has been highest rated German brand for reliability recently.
Saab 9-5 is getting very long in the tooth, compared to competitors.
The new A6 quattro is one awesome vehicle, IMO. It is my pick, without considering price.
The A4 quattro avant comes with a new 2.0 liter turbo 4 cyl. motor, using direct injection. Makes about 200 hp and about 200 ft. lbs. of torque, at low rpms like a Saab.
With Saab you get a bigger wagon. With Audi you get more up to date style and awd.
I have little brand loyalty, except where it is earned. (I have had BMWs, a Porsche, a Mercedes, a Volvo, Toyotas, a Mazda, Chevys, Fiats, an Opel, plus present stable). Best to date-BMW.
