SMBC installed - have question re: setup

Got my SMBC from MP Performance and installed it at the base setting they sent it at - about 4 threads showing. Didn't seem to do much, so I started tweaking. With 3 threads showing (one full turn in) there seemed to be a slight inprovement; with 2.5 (one and a half turns in) a bit more improvement yet, nothing dramatic. Now, here's the odd bit: at 2 threads showing (two turns in from baseline), there's a noticable hesistation/stumble when getting hard on the throttle. At no point did the CEL appear.
I understand the theory behind the SMBC function within the system, but I'm a little confused about what could cause a stumble at the higher setting. About the only thing I can figure is the spring might be so compressed at that point that when the turbo pressure forces the ball up the air might have trouble getting past the spring to the BPV. This is rampant speculation - if anyone has a better idea (or even an actual scientific explanation) I'm all ears.
FWIW, I backed the SMBC off to 2.5 threads, the last good setting I had before getting into the stumble.
