power steering fluid

Noticed yesterday that my '03 Aero (~35k) was making a noise consistent with low power steering fluid. It was odd, because during my first round of errands there was no noise, but by the end of the second it was quite noticeable. I checked the fluid and sure enough it was low. There was still some visible in the resevoir, but it wasn't up to the dipstick on the cap.
Fortunately the dealer was in between me and my destination, so I stopped in there. I described the situation to the service advisor, who promptly pulled out an old-school looking can of the CH-11S or whatever PS fluid. I used this to top the car off and the noise vanished.
My question is, has anybody else had that sort of experience with the PS fluid? Anybody else's service advisor keep a can of the stuff in his desk?
I figure I'll keep an eye on the level and if it drops take it in for an actual inspection.
Lastly, is the PS fluid available at regular auto parts stores?
