As I understand it if/when we, the US, gets low sulphur diesel fuel, then perhaps, the emmissions issues can be conquered.
They will never entirely cure the stink or the noise though, and one critical element of European diesel popularity, tax breaks, likely will never be seen in the US.
I do think Saab and diesels would be a good fit.
