Dash lights gone weird

My wife has a 9-5 wagon, 00, automatic, 14k miles. Yesterday, she reported, the dash signal directed her to the info panel, which said "Front light out" or some similar wording -- driver's side low beam not functioning (nor on DRL). Ok, no prob, so she drove it -- and while underway all the dash lighting and instruments quit, went blank, call it what you will (including the speedo down to zero!)
I haven't driven the car on the street or had the blank-out experience, but I did put it in the barn on Friday night, and noticed then one odd item that was repeated yesterday when I put it away after duplicating her experience with the light-out signal. The thing it did was to issue a long sighing groan just after the ignition was cut off. It reminded me a bit of the sound I hear from the hooter valve on my 91 9kT, but in a decending pitch and for a considerably longer period.
Car is under warrantee, will go to dealer for repair, but since dealer is often clueless about things on my 91 (despite a decade in which to get with it), I'll appreciate input on this whole deal from anybody who can help.
Thanks!
