I've owned an 01 V6 for 7 months. A variety of problems with the 01's were improved starting with 02.
I've had one issue where the car hesitates at starting, but it's being addressed under warranty and isn't enough of a bother to even consider a nuisance.
Other than that, I've found it to be boringly reliable. This is far and away the best car I've even owned. It's a thrill to drive for multiple reasons.
Being that you've already owned Euro cars you already know that being proactive with the maintenance is a must.
Without looking I'd presume the price difference between the 9-5 and the BMW would be rather compelling.
