Chk engine light OK to drive on...... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: need advice, Anna, Sun, 24 Jul 2005 09:21:39 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
When the check engine light comes on it's OK to continue driving. The check engine light is a notification of an emmissions fault, not any kind of a mechanical problem the would disable the car. An oil light is an example of a light where you should not continue to operate the car, and an oil light is red whereas a check engine light is only yellow.
An example of the most common thing that triggers a CEL is a loose or missing gas cap. A CEL can be transitory, that is the CEL can come on and the fault can be corrected and the light will not reappear. There will be a code stored, but if the situation resolves itself, no need for a dealer visit. Meanwhile if the CEL comes on and stays on, and the vehicle continues to run fine, then schedule a service visit soon, but you don't have to go immediately. If when the CEL comes on and the car runs poorly, then it may have triggered a limp home mode, you'll know when this happens and you won't have any doubts about getting to the nearest dealer. It's still OK to drive in limp home mode.
