With regards to the vibration problem, I may have a potential solution devised by my actual employer, Renault.

A little history:

The flagship Renault Vel Satis (with tall wheels) is having the same kind of small vibrations we are experiencing with our 9-5s. 120 km/h and up, some cars are "humming" slightly, even with new, professionnaly balanced tires. The "real" problem lies in the design of the car itself, which is more prone to even the smallest "out of balance" from the wheels. Give this to the compliances in the bushings, articulations and the likes, usually designed to absorb theses vibrations.

In fact, the root cause of the vibration is in the wheel to hub mounting area: as in all mechanical assemblies, there is a very small play between the wheel centering hole and the hub centering cylinder. At Renault, the wheel hole is 60.1mm and the hub is 60mm. This very small difference is the culprit for the vibrations. The wheel is never perfectly centered on the hub, therefore is vibrates at higher speeds.

Their solution ? Reproduce (on the balancing machine) the same "play" between the wheel bore and the hub found on the car.

Here is a resumé of their procedure, including some standard balancing procedures:

1- Ride the car for at least 2 km and then jack her up immediately;
2- realease hand brake and put gear lever in neutral;
3- rotate the wheels and position all the valves at 12 o'clock (as a visual reference);
4- remove all the stones (if any) in the tread sculptures;
5- remove the wheels;
6- install the wheels on the balancing machine WITH THE VALVES AT 12 O'CLOCK...
7- ...THEN and only then, tighten the wheels on the balancing machine
8- balance the wheels using the FINE balancing procedure;
9- Wheels must be balanced to within 5 g dynamic and 10 g static, no more;
10- carefully clean the mounting surfaces, both wheel and hub.
11- reinstall the wheels on the vehicle WITH THE VALVES AT 12'O clock;
12- pre-torque the wheel bolts to 25 lbs-ft, begining with the 2 lower bolts, then the 3 upper bolts (note, this is not the standard "star" pattern);
13- rotate the wheels 180 degrees to place the valve at 6 o'clock;
14- lower the vehicle on its wheels;
15- finally, torque to the appropriate value which is 100 lbs-ft for 14 mm fasteners;
16- Road test the vehicle to confirm the results.

With that procedure, the play between the hub and the wheel bore will be accounted on the balancing machine. If the wheel is reinstalled on the car with the play in the same location, balance should be perfect.

So anyone want to try this procedure soon ?

I, for one, will apply it to my next tire changes, just because it can't hurt.

Comments welcome.
