Yes, the specs are only required if you're following the OLM intervals. For my money, I feel M1 15W-50 is the single best oil to use in a Saab turbo, with M1 5W-40 a close second (use based on cold climate starting temps) & M1 0W-40 coming in third. I wouldn't use anything in the 30 wt range, but that's just my preference. Also, with only 4 liter oil capacity, I'm completely comfortable going 10k miles between changes but am less so extending beyond that. Of course, my '99 doesn't have the OLM, & GM's done a ton of work to get the timing exactly right on it. Using either 15W-50 or 5W-40, I'd probably rely on the OLM to tell me when to change my oil. Oh, BTW, does any model year of the 9-5 have an actual OLM, or is it still the "time for service" light?
