tranny fluid low and dry, where did it go?

I had a tranny flush and all was well for about 1500 miles (checked before I left). Then somehow I got about 1/2 quart low on tranny fluid. So I am out of town and the Saab dealer in Albuquerque got sold from University to Garcia who was closed on Saturday. Topped it up with Toyota T-4 (same as 3309) for only $4.15/qt. Nice at wet after top up, and rosy red. Drive some more, looks pretty dry, i.e., mark on dipstick, but almost nothing to wipe off onto a rag (not low yet but haven’t checked it today) and kind of dark. I am due for my 30K so I will run this by the dealer. There are not red stains were I am parking and there is fluid in there, but when it was low it was just at the very bottom of the dipstick. I am also getting kick sometimes from D to N and R to N. I have to hold it in gear and then slap it into neutral. So I think something must be going on. Any ideas so I can avoid the new software nonsense. I am thinking some kind of pinhole leak somewhere or maybe the metal washer simply went bad (can that even happen to a steel washer?). Very odd that I had no trouble for so many miles and then suddenly I notice it is low. No warning lights, runs fine on the highway.
I might try the Vegas dealer although it looks like some have had trouble with Findlay. May just wait till I get to CA, topping the tranny off if need be.
