You are mistaken about service histories on dealer/auction cars, especially as Saabs have free scheduled maintenance and the services are listed as warranty items, dealer/auction car or private party, it's part of the service history availible to every Saab dealer. Some Saab dealers are sticky about showing you the actual Saab service history citing privacy concerns, but most are willing.
Negotiation is all about knowledge, the more you know the better equipped you are to face a pro, and it doesn't take too much to outsmart most car salesfolks. There are many sources for pricing info kbb.com, edmunds.com or you can ask the BB what a fair price is, or you can email me too, I'm a Saab dealer in SoCal.
Most car buying strategists say you must negotiate the price of the new car and price of the trade in seperately, or said/done by getting the best price on what you wanna' buy and then throwing in the trade at the end.
However to negotiate you'll have to negotiate with a human being and they could be a schlockey person or a person who has some integrity that you can trust. Walk away from the schlock and if you can't tell that difference, there's no helping you. Many Saab folks are former Saturn folks (yours truly too) here in SoCal so you can have your cake and eat it too.
Do visit your local Saab dealer and ask for an explaination of the Certified Pre Owned, or CPO, process and benefits. CPO doesn't always guarantee a perfect used car, your still at the mercy of the dealers standards, but it does set concrete standards for pre-selection, inspection and reconditioning and extends the factory warranty from 4/50 to 6/100, all at a very competitive price for an extended warranty.
And Saab offers special finance rates on CPO's this month 1.0-2.9-3.9% for 24-36-60 months respectively.
And if you haven't heard it before, I'm here to tell ya'...All the cool people drive SportWagons.....good choice!
