The spark plug is used to listen for knock. Might want to make sure you have the correct NGK plugs installed at the proper gap. MAF sensors do fail though. For $130 or so, it's a maintenance item as far as I'm concerned....every 25k.
I have also heard of knock coinciding with low oil pressure just before a catastrophic failure. If your oil light has flickered at all, have the pressure checked.
