I hope my reply didn't sound like an indictment of the AAA man. An easy test of the alternator is to measure the voltage of the battery with the car running. It should measure between 14-15 volts. I usually find that a slow idle with the "powerhogs" on will result in a lower reading, but it will be greater than the static (car off) voltage.
Sometimes, alternators fail for reasons unknown. Modern cars place a significant drain on batteries and they seem to be designed to fail quickly rathern and a slow death.
