The sensor haven't really gotten any worse but the cars fuel management system has gotten A LOT more finnicky with triggering the CE light for the smallest reason.
This is due to countries and States more and more stringent rules in how much emissions a car is allowed to send out the tail pipe.
Before 1986 it wasn't even a light turning on when the sensor went bad, only a mileage counter that turned on every 30K miles alerting that the O2 sensor had to be replaced.
