If you need a new timing chain you have bigger issues than that with your car.
The timing chain doesn't wear out just like that but it might be due to oil sludge issues and maybe your car is then covered under the new 8 year engine warranty if you have ALL the oil change receipts.
No, it'd not really a DIY job to do the timing chain since you have to replace the timing chain guides at the same time. It is no use to just "roll" a new chain in from the top since the chain guides are also worn out.
The whole engine/transmission needs to come down a bit to be able to remove the front engine cover to access the timing and balance chain gears.
It is no oil pan gasket per see but an anerobic sealant.
Dropping the oil pan is part of the job when doing a timing chain, together with removing the cylinder head.
$1800.00 all depends on what they replace or not. It could be more too if more hard parts are worn out.
