I just got back from a tour of the Maritimes, running about 4500km on my tires. I was going to rotate them before and now wish that I had. I had a full load, probably within 150 lbs of the maximum and as a result my springs were letting the tail sit low and the rear wheels tilted (camber) inward more than usual. I had them inflated to about 35 psi, but likely should have made it 39 psi.
I have had these tires (National P215/55R16 93H) for about 30000 km, and this is the first time I have seen cupping on the inside of the rears. My opinion is that it is the suspension on my vehicle, 99MY 9-5 SW, that needs to be changed. In the meantime, I will have the degree of cupping checked, and may or may not replace the tires before I get the rear springs and shocks "updated".
In spite of all this, the car drove really well the whole time! It was only near the end of the trip that I detected louder than usual tread noise, and noticed the cupping of the treads.
I agree with ChuckH - check the board for posts on the topic. There are some things that can be done to alter the camber with shims, but in my case I am pretty sure that it is just time in service that created the suspension problem. By the way, now that the load has been removed, the tail is sitting up, and it is possible that the cupping will stop.
Cheers,
