The Water valve, heater bypass valve (I think these are the same except the water valve may be referring to the whole assembly with the heater bypass valve being a part, not sure though), and water pump seals are the most common coolant leaks on these bulletin boards.
Heater bypass valve by description would only be used if the heater was not on. The heater I believe uses the hot coolant to generate the heat, when not in use the bypass valve redirects the coolant from the heater. This, coincidently, seems to be why the advice for a overheating engine is to turn the heater on.
GaryH - your leak is almost guaranteed to be the water valve or heater bypass valve - the location of your leak is exactly where mine was and the dealer changed out the water valve assembly. It may have been that they could have gotten away with just replacing the valve. Someone else on here mentioned that their dealer tried to get them to pay for replacing the whole assembly when it really was only the valve that was the problem. The whole assembly is around $300 I think and the valve is maybe $30-$40. I don't know how complicated the replacement would be, mine was done under warranty. If it helps, my invoice listed less than an hour of labour to replace the whole water valve.
