Andrew, the Check Engine took your car into Limp Home mode which does a lot of awful things to idle - the cause can be a lot of things (eg. I had the throttle actuator replaced on my M99 Griffin; it can also be a defect of the ECU - this is replacable free of charge in acoordance with a GM service recall).
As for the displays this is indeed a common problem - I understand almost all pre 2000 cars had this. I am about to try and deal with this by asking the dealer to talk to Saab and get this done under warranty since this is such a common thing. (My car is not on warranty anymore). I suggest you try the same.
Regards
Yury
