Sid Fiddler now gets "replace key battery"

Hi Again All,
Well today I drove the car to work after having fiddled with the SID last night. All I did was remove it, take it apart, remove and check all the bulbs (the two out of six failed ones I did not reinstall so I can source them), pen/iron/foam the contacts and reasemble.
Now I have a 'replace key battery' error on startup. I thought nothing of it as I was using the 'other' key when I was fiddling last night (the key I had only used once), but this morning I used the key I've been driving the car with untill now and it gave the same error. Neither key gave the error before I messed with the SID.
Could it be to do with the fact I have removed two of the SID globes? Can't see how given they were already open circuit... shouldn't make a difference should it? Is there a 'clear' function such as leaving the battery disconnected for half an hour?
Speaking of which, I need to remove the car's battery as there is a little corrosion around the base of it I'd like to clean up. I assume you can just remove and replace the battery without anything unexpected happening with the computers?
I will be getting a Haynes manual soon which will hopefully cover the inane questions but thanks in the mean time.
Cheers
Steve
