As I've said here in the past, I may be the oddball who supports the "vulnerable" key position out in the open for one reason: it forces the driver and passenger to behave safer . . . almost a homepathic effect.
In general, a driver keeping both hands on the wheel and a front passenger staying in the seated position run an almost negligible risk of hitting ANY controls by mistake, in what you have to admit is a confined space--after all, it's a car, not an RV. (Reminds of when an old girlfriend told about her grandmother kicking out a car's windshield in her youth, but that's a whole other story!)
I'm sure one could argue that a child in the rear seat would be a compelling reason for someone in front to lean over the key and console, but why not pull over and stop the car first?
I tend to respect engineering that makes you THINK about it.
Just my $0.12 (inflation)
