According to the data given to NHTSA by GM, the 2001 9-5 and 9-3 4 cylinder (Rev 3.2 DI) has an 88% probabibility of DI Cassette failure over 10 years, with about 25% probability that the failure would occur while driving. By model year 2002 (Rev. 3.4 DI) that failure rate drops to something like 50%, with a slightly higher probability of failure while driving. BY 2003, with Rev. 3.6 DI and the new software, the rate drops to 1.5%. With numbers like that, I expect a recall.
The V-6 models I don't think had a hardware update, but if so it was only to 3.2 or 3.4. It probably had the software update in 2003 (but no hardware mod) and that cut the failure rate about in half. Note that the V-6 DI circuitry is identical to that for the 4 cylinder, according to GM, but of course there's just 3/4 of it in each cassette. The V-6 has a very low incidence of stalling because the car will usually limp along on one cylinder bank. A new DI for the V-6 models was supposed to have gone into production this month, along with one for the 4 cylinder that at least had a new part number.
