Tom:
I've installed probably 14 or 15 sets of front disc brake pads in my life... on about 10 different cars. I've always found that the first few hundred miles/kilometers of driving require extra attention to ensure the reduced brake effectivness after such work is compensated for.
I will say that these Akebono Euro pads settled in faster than anything I remember. It's important to point out that I installed fresh rotors too. In the past, I've replaced pads w/o new rotors or a re-face job. Those instances always require more time to reach "good bite" because the new flat pads have to wear in to match the slight surface uneveness of used rotors. I would never put new pads in if the rotors were quite noticeably grooved or worn (subjective).
With the OE setup, I had the rotors resurfaced to try to remove a pedal pulsation. Put them back on w/the same pads and found it needed a week of driving to regain the braking power I had before rotor resurfacing. Once again, I think the pad/rotor surfaces needed a bit of time to wear in to each other's exact surface profile.
