The rear springs are still under some tension when the strut ass'y is off the car. However, I did this job twice w/o a compressor by being CAREFUL! Wear heavy work gloves and lean on the spring retainer with an assistant when removing the nut. I was actually able to compress the springs enough by myself (I weigh 220 though) by leaning on them while starting the nuts on the new shocks.
As JG points out in his new thread above, the original nuts are often rusted to the shock shaft threads to the point where destruction of the originals is needed. I had do this on one side because the nut would not turn past a certain point.
