As it turns out to be, what Saab USA recommends/demands and what dealers are pouring into the car doesn't necessarily have to be the same thing. Dealers seems to have quite a bit of leeway to use their own judgment after what I have read here.
Saab also use the word synthetic as meaning both fully synthetic and semi synthetic in that the workshop manual states for a 2001 that all cars leaving the factory are now filled with "synthetic" oil (meaning semi synthetic).
And then further down they list different oils as being "recommended" and "lowest requirement".
The 5W-30 semi synthetic is the lowest required oil for high output turbo engines up to 2003 and the use of 0W-30 fully synthetic is recommended.
As from 2004 the 9-5 is filled with "fully synthetic" oil from factory and Saab says Mobil 1 0W-30 or 0W-40 as lowest requirements.
