The treadware # is an indicator of how long the tire might last. It's not an exact thing though. ie, a tire with a 400 may or may not last 2x as long as a tire with a 200. It is also an abstract indication of how soft/sticky the tire compound is. The lower the softer/stickier, but the faster it gets worn out.
FWIW, my '03 Aero came with Pirelli P-Zero Rosso, max performance summer only tires. Treadware rating of 220. The Kuhmo Ecsta ASX, ultra high performance all season tires I replaced them with are rated at 420. The Pirellis wore out around 26k, I'm hoping for 40k from the Kuhmos.
