I have not done that myself. But no worries, if it is indeed the starter that caused the problem, I reproduce below an extract from the Haynes Manual for your reference and hope it will be useful for you.
According to Haynes, this is a "fairly difficult task suitable for competent DIY mechanic". The steps to remove the starter are:
----------------
a) starter motor is located on the left-hand rear side of the engine and is bolted to the engine endplate and transmission. Disconnect negative lead of the battery.
b) apply handbrake. Jack up front of the car and support on axle stand.
c) from inside the engine compartment, remove the starter motor upper mounting bolt.
d) unscrew the nuts and disconnect the wiring terminals from the starter motor / solenoid.
e) cut and release the cable-tie / strap from around the solenoid to release the wiring loom.
f) from under the vehicle, unscrew the lower starter motor mounting bolt, then lower the starter motor from the engine compartment.
g) refitting is a reversal of removal. Tighten all wire connections securely.
--------------
Sounds a simple task. Not sure if there is a need to jack up the car as in step b) if you can reach the lower nut from the engine compartment. Removing battery connection, however, is important.
Good luck and happy Saabing.
