I also have a '98 CSE and am a long time Saab owner. My significant other fell in love with a '99 9-5 last year while looking for a replacement for her beloved but totaled Millenia. I had some trepidations because when we started it on the lot some blue smoke issued. So far the car has turned out to be a creampuff. In 10k miles the only thing I have done besides the usual services is to tighten a banjo fitting that was leaking a drop a day of transmission fluid. Most turbos will kick out a little blue smoke if they have sat unused for a few days. From my searches in this forum it seems that the sludge problem is associated with later models and not so much with the 99 light pressure turbo. Also the sludge problem may be due to extended times between oil changes. I use dino oil and change it every 4000 miles.
The 9-5 lpt auto may not be quite as fun to drive as a 225hp CSE 5 speed but it is comfortable, has a tighter body, and is sure footed.
