I have an '01 9-5 Aero sedan - same problem. It's a CPO vehicle with plenty of warranty left. First try in the morning - long crank, no start. 2nd try - immediate start, stumble/die. 3rd (and sometimes 4th) try - stumble and die. Then immediate start, everything normal.
The first time the dealer had the car, their master tech (a really fine mechanic - he's worked on all of our Saabs over the years...) was puzzled. No codes stored. Updated software on car - no improvement.
After a couple of days of looking at the car and replicating the problem, they replaced the CPS. I drove it home. Worked well for a day, then back to same problem.
Back to the dealer. Tried replacing the DIC - eliminated problem, but wanted to keep car for another day to test. Then, just to see what would happen, put old DIC back in - also no problem starting. Suggested I take car home for weekend, but kept paperwork on job "open." Problem returned. Now, always catches immediately, but always dies three or four times before normal start. No long crank.
Back to dealer again. Replaced DIC early this morning. Tested car at 5 p.m. - starts normally. I will head out there tomorrow morning to see what's up.
I have been driving their loaner 9-2x Aero, so just a bit of inconvenience.
Not very Saab-y, though.
I'll post my "adventures" back at the dealer tomorrow.
