Throttle Body Failture

Friday night, when I went to start my car I discovered it was non-driveable. The car started but the engine immediately stopped. I tried a couple more times, and found the engine would remain running but only if I kept on the gas. Regardless, the engine had Zero power / Non-driveable. I had it towed to the nearest dealer and it was fixed today.
The service rep told the throttle body was replaced and the car is now running fine. I'm a little confused by this as I thought that when a throttle body failed the car would have gone into a 'limp home' mode, where the TB is driven by the throttle cable, not by 'wire'. My car was definitely not driveable.
The last time something like this happened (causing a tow that time too) a vacuum hose had come loose, with almost identical symptoms. I was surprised to hear it was the TB.
Any thoughts / comments. The vehicle is a '00 Aero w/ 82miles. Last major service was done at 58K miles (the 60K).
