I also did recently my homework and found out that G-05 (Mercedes) is pretty much same as G-48. There are small differencies in the water and silicates contents. Especially the silicates is set at mximum of 250 ppm for G-48 and at a range 250 to 300 something for the G-05. I do not know if that's significant but as the newer chemicals has NO silicates (ie, DexCool from GM), I gather that it might not be as desirable to have "lots of silicates" in the cooling system.
I also found out that the G11 (ZVW 237 105) from Volkswagen is in fact G-48 as defined by BASF, the main producer of antifreeze chemicals (http://www.basf.de/basf/html/e/produkte/gebiete/automotive/produktinfo/produkte/produktdetails_PN=1928.html).
So I went to a VW dealer yeasterday and got a gallon of their ZVW 237 105 (alias G11 alias G-48) for CAD$25. I believe my 1999 9-5 deserves the same coolant it was filled with in the factory... and I believe that if I pay $10 more for the right stuff, it makes no difference in the long haul of 2 to 3 years between renewals of the coolant
just my 2 cents...
