engine cranks but won't start

I tried to start my car this afternoon and the engine cranked but would not turn over. Tried several times, waited an hour and tried again and no luck. The car had been driven an hour earlier (took it for a wash).
I have a 1999 9-5 2.3 with 115,000 miles. The car has been serviced regularly and has been pretty reliable. Only significant issues being the DI cassette replacement about 3 years ago and couple SID replacements in 1999.
I should add that the alarm started chirping on its own (for a few seconds) about three months ago. My mechanic replaced the battery in the key (he said that had worked for another client) and that seemed to lessen the problem with the alarm chirping. However, a couple of weeks later I had another random alarm chirp and the service theft alarm notice came on (I did read about this problem on saabnet). He checked the system with his analyzer and said there were no error codes. He also checked the alarm battery and said the voltage was fine. Been riding it for about three or four weeks and no problem until today.
Could this alarm thing be part of the problem I am experiencing? Something else perhaps? Any insight/recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
