I replaced mine two weeks ago, got the replacement battery at a local discount auto parts store. You will lose individualized settings on your SID (I lost my 80mph speed alarm setting), and you will have to reset the clock (year, date, and time), but that is about it.
My experience is that the battery in a 9-5 will only last 3 to 3-1/2 years maximum. I am now on my third battery - new at Oct 1999 build, replacement in June 2002, replacement in Oct 2005. I guess there are just too many computers and other electronics on board for longer life.
