VW folks love cool Saabs..... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] (#81) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Mike Lynch) on Fri, 4 Nov 2005 10:35:42 In Reply to: Considering 9-5 Purchase - few Qs, Martin, Fri, 4 Nov 2005 09:11:38 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
VW folks love their Saabs. The motivation for buying a VW is often an alternative to more mainstream Japanese cars and corresponds to a Saab being an alternative to more mainstream or popular German and Japanese cars in it's class. I've got 3 VW trade-ins on my lot now. Also VW folks often aren't enamored with a glorified VW, an Audi.
2002 was the first year of the, MCE, Mid Cycle Enhancement which particularly enhanced the Aero with the addition of the killer sport seats. All years of 9-5s are CR friendly for reliability and CR also endorses the 9-5 for safety too.
The Saab IDM aka DCI recall/campaign is a drop in the bucket compared to similar problems at VW. There's a little blurb all the way at the bottom of this page "This is a problem solving forum for over 250,000 Saab owners, so expect to see problems discussed here even though our cars are generally very reliable" and a 9-5 is not only a reliable Saab, but a good candidate for the most reliable European car of all time. It's not often CR endorses a non-Japanese car. CR likes Passats for example, but doesn't recommend their reliability.
Nothing in particular to watch out for. I would certainly recommend a Saab dealer pre-purchase inspection for a car under warranty as most 2002's should be still.
For a nice car at the $18k price level I might forego CPO coverage, but for $20k it should be included. A CPO 2002 9-5 Aero stick wagon would list for about $21k on my lot and be a cinch to sell. BTW I can sell you an excellent General Motors Protection Plan MajorGuard "bumper to bumper" warranty on a 2002 with less than 50k miles for 36 months and 36,000 miles for less than $2,500.
I wouldn't reject an automatic 9-5 as many die hard stick drivers have grown quite fond of the excellent 5 speed auto as the autos are expecially well suited to the high torque at low rpm's Saab turbo motors. Also the shift linkage in a stick 9-5 is good, but not great.
You'll not only be joining the Saab community, but also ascending to the status of being offically cool, as all the cool people drive SportWagons.....
