They are correct in one way.
If someone that doesn't know how to install a battery and maybe manage to get the wrong one and if that battery happen to have the + - posts on opposite sides it is possible to fry many sensitive electronic devices inside the car if they put the battery cables on and short out the car.
If you don't fall under that category driver, it is safe for you to replace it by yourself.
If the new battery also die after awhile, you might have a bad alternator.
