Yeah it's good for the life of the car, we have just not been able to determine what the car manufacturers mean with "life of car" (read it as sarcasm).
Saab have claimed the manual transmission being filled for life for 30-40 years now. I think many of the C900 transmission problems could have been avoided by changing the fluid now and then and clean out the dirt inside.
Every 30K miles together with the rest of the major service items is a good rule to change the transmission fluid (auto and manual).
I use the new Saab MTF0063 transmission fluid for the 94 and up manual transmissions.
