We never had the integrated seats, but I imagine that Saab would have made them work (i.e - crash tested them!!) better than most aftermarket booster seats. They all seem to be only a little better than a stack of books to sit on!! My nearly 11 year old boy protested loudly as we tried to force him to continue to sit in a full childseat with side head protection. I always kidded him I'd keep him there until he got his first driver's permit.. Anyway, after a few months of using the convertible bottom part as the booster in the middle of the rear seat, we relented to putting him in the rear right passenger side seat (still slightly accessible from the driver's reach) and finally bought one of those belt pads that correctly positions the shoulder belt portion lower onto his chest and not his neck.
Having survived unscathed a T-bone crash in our 1985 900 Turbo when he was less than 5 and in the middle rear position childseat, I trust our 1999 9-5 will protect him well enough in the years to come...
