Yesterday I drove from Lawrence KS to St. Louis MO and Back. Almost 600 miles. It was low 50's and light winds. Trip there was a dream. I peaked at 35.1 MPGs (door to door) but in local St. Louis traffic I ended up at 34.9 MPG. The trip home was getting caught in Friday PM St. Louis traffic, then a huge traffic stoppage 1/2 way back on I70, then after stuck in that slug of cars all the way to Kansas City, then end of game traffic in Lawrence. So the return trip was a disappointing 33.2 MPGs (reset in St. Louis) and should have been much better. I did the speed limit. I find that many folks are not driving as fast or as insanely as I have observed in the past. The interstate is mostly posted 70 MPH. When trying to squeeze out the MPGs I will stay out of boost, and on down hill grades I shift into neutral to remove the drag of the transmission in gear.
I am looking forward to driving from St. Louis to Port Huron MI on one tank of gas... I think that I can do this if the winds are not adverse.
I think that the original Michelin tires have less rolling resistant than the Pirelli's on the wife's 04 Aero Wagon. More supple side walls.
ACC was econo mode all the way, lights off there and lights on for the return.
2003 9-5 Aero Wagon automatic, 22K, 92 octane Amoco, inflated tires to 39 PSI before the trip.
