Recurring check engine light--ECM, wire harness, o2?

I'm getting more and more frustrated by the emissions system in my 9-5 Aero. Been fighting this for a long time. Back in like August '03, I got a check engine light for my rear o2 sensor. Coincidentally, my registration was due like a month after so there was no time to waste fixing it. I replaced the rear o2 sensor and the car passed smog fine. But like 3 weeks later the check engine light came back on, same error code. Then it would go on and off periodically. I basically gave up trying to fix it.
However, becoming increasingly annoyed by having to look at the stupid check engine light, I took it in to another shop (after being kind of dismayed by the service at the first one) and once again, they say I either have 1) a bad rear o2 sensor (now a year old), 2) a problem with my wiring harness ($1k repair, apparently) or 3) a problem with my ECM ($1k repair, also).
Because the problem is only happening intermittently (usually things are working fine, but I'm getting some periodic error in the system that keeps kicking on my check engine light) they can't figure out where the failure is coming from. So basically I can either spend 3k and replace everything, or do nothing and have to keep looking at the check engine light going on for a few weeks, then off, then back on, then off.
Anyone have any similar experiences or suggestions?
