I think a high-mileage car can be a good buy. For someone to drive 77,000 miles in three years or so, the miles have to be mostly highway, and those miles are really easy on a car.
I bought a 2000 Viggen in the summer of 2003, and it had about 76,000 miles when I got it. A little more than 2 years later, I now have almost 131,000 miles.
In that time, I've bought tires twice, at about 92,000 and again at about 123,000. I've had the front end aligned. I've replaced the front pads and rotors at about 113,000. I've replaced the battery. The car still has the original clutch, and the rear pads and rotors still have plenty of life. All these things are normal wear items, and your extended warranty wouldn't help.
Failures I've had the would likely be covered by an extended warranty:
1. DIC failed at about 103,000 (now a recall item)
2. Parking brake cable
3. Headlight relay
4. A fuse for the radiator fan
5. Bosch BPV valve
6. Seat belt doesn't retract properly
7. Right rear door automatic locking recently stopped working
8. Intermittent and hard to diagnose problem with AC. Compressor stops running when it rains. This is the most annoying and potentially most costly problem I've had.
Of all these items, I think only the headlight relay failed before 100,000 miles.
I say if you get a good price, and the car has a good service history, go for it. Based on my experience, I might even pass on the extended warranty, but it depends how much value you put on the peace of mind.
Good luck!
Dave
