I pulled the fuse for the DRL's years ago and received longer lamp life. I don't believe I have replaced a headlamp in nearly two years until this past week, I installed the final 2 lamps of the 6 freebies I received from Osram/Sylvania after calling their customer service line and politely asking if they had had a bad run of lamps since mine were failing too frequently.
I will spend more time this weekend studying the wiring schematic and SID description in my WIS. Since I know lamps are occasionaly used as fuses and other current limiters in guitar amplifiers (SWR for one manufacturer), I wonder if Saab isn't doing someting similar with the headlamps and SID. If the SID sees zero current flow, no alarm since the lights must not be "ON". If the SID sees 4.5 amps or more in the headlamp circuit, no alarm since the 55 watt lights must be "ON" and working. If the SID sees only 0.5 amps, an alarm is generated since the lamps must be "ON" and only the tiny long-life bulb is working.
