I think I've found the cure for the dreaded Saab IDM/DIC failure problems. Just buy a new one - and put it in the trunk. :) I have a 2000 Aero with about 34k and the original IDM. I have the latest T7 software installed so it can warn of impending IDM doom. About 2 months ago, my CEL started toggling on and off every couple restarts like clockwork. The fault codes showed misfires and a cam position sensor which seemed to be IDM related, but the car was running fine so I kept driving it. I was even so bold as to take a 600 mile road trip, and the darn CEL stayed on the whole time. After a while that CEL was starting to scare me. I decided to buy a new IDM on my own dime rather than risk failure waiting for the recall. Ironically, as soon as I ordered the new IDM, the CEL went off and has stayed off for almost 3 weeks! The new one will stay in the trunk for now, perhaps it has some magical effect.
An interesting bit of news from this is that I've verified that there is indeed a new part being shipped. The current part number is 55559955, and the rev on the part is TK3.7. Given the new TK number, I assume something inside the IDM has been revised. It still looks the same on the outside and is still black. I think it would be smart for anyone buying a new IDM now to look for this part. Here is a photo showing the label on the box and on the part.
