Looking for some expertise here: My wife's 2000 9-5 SE Wagon (~55k miles) has been making a clunking/chunking/thunking noise for awhile and we were finally able to get the thing in the shop (dealer) to have it serviced last week. The technicians couldn't find the problem on their own, so I went and took a test drive with the Service Manager and I was able to point out the sound to him - in the process, I discovered that the sound was more pronounced in the passenger seat (normally, I'm driving when I'm in the car, but not for this test drive.)
They ended up replacing an engine mount, a transmission mount, a control arm bushing, both wheel bearings and (perhaps unrelated) the abs sensor and sensor retainer. Fortunately, this was all done under warranty (we bought it as a certified car.) That it was engine mount related made perfect sense to me due to the timing of the noise vis-a-vis shifting/engine loading.
I picked up the car last night and on the drive home everything seemed great, no funny noises and the car seemed tighter than before almost like new (that might just be in my head though.)
However, this morning my wife called on her way to work to tell me that it was still doing it. Not having heard it firsthand, I cannot say with certainty that it is the same noise, but she's pretty reliable about this kind of thing (and she's pretty well tuned to problems with this car - probably, because she really wanted a Volvo and I steered her toward this car - someday I'll learn.) Additional info: this was the first morning we've had frost on our car windows this - probably the coldest night of the year so far.
I'm inclined to believe that the dealer really is trying to get it fixed, but that they just missed something - perhaps, a different mount broke (new weakest-link theory) - or, they over-torqued a mount - or, there is a root cause problem that wasn't addressed (that is, something is causing the mounts to break other than old age/wear). The other question that occurs to me is: Why would the replace the wheel bearings under warranty? Not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but it seems that they would be considered wear items and excluded from the warranty.
