We had 12" in KC, see massive pile north of KC, then envision driving in it...
My Nokian WR's are at the same mileage as your Avon's. These are truly AWESOME tires in the snow. I had to really POUND the brakes to get the ABS to come on, and even starting in SPORT mode, left many SUV's in the proverbial dust. Turning was controlled with no slide what-so-ever, at speeds that should not have been attained. I was even able to get up a slippery hill, that an SUV (albiet with 20" rims...) could not make. This did not make the driver happy.
As for your braking style, I often used to do this with my GTI in my early days. They call that style of braking "Canadian Braking" if I recall! Winter mode on the Sentronic is nice, but not needed with the Nokian's. Normal or sport works fine, so far.
I thought long & hard about the Avon's or the P-0 Nero M/S's, but both were backordered at the time I needed tires. It is good to see that an old autocross tire is making a comeback in the US.
Stay safe everyone, and hope for more snow.
