just had the same problem on my MY99 9-5SW, but it threw an engine light, with code P0116.
In all probability it would not be the sensor on the side of the engine, because its input is used to make other calculations, but who knows, with time maybe the contacts are corroded. I bet the thermostat is stuck open, which is why it takes so long for your cabin to warm up.
It is weird if you replaced it in the summer with the water pump.
Is the fluid level okay in the expansion tank - have you got any leaks on the ground? Does it smell like coolant in the car at all - heater core leak?
Good Luck
