From around '90 on (don't quote me on the year), 9000's used the Direct Ignition system too. Yes, the cassette does die, and yes it can leave you standed. That can be resolved by carrying a new one. I've never been stranded in either my 9000 or 900SE because of a DI cassette failure.
If you want a boring appliance with no fun factor or uniquness factor, get a Camry. If you want a car that will remind you of your 9000 in its performance and still be very unique, get a 9-5. BTW, in the US, 9-5's didn't start until '99. Get a 2000 or newer for the best reliability. Or even consider a '97 or '98 9000.
