The Catera had the same engine? Huh.

I hate to be the one to mention the J-word (Japanese) but are you looking for reliability or a unique car to drive?

I've owned a 01 9-5 SE V6 wagon (bought with 45k miles) and an 02 9-3 SE (bought new). My neighbor and close friend had a 01 9-5 SE sedan (bought with 35k miles). First the good news, I loved the 9-3 up to about 30k and loved the wagon even more for a month ....then problems started. First the car had a bad AC condenser and SID display. It also had an odd vibration issue. The car would just shiver and shake (search my posts for details). I had about 5 sets of tires, 4 sets of rims, 2 alignments, replaced shocks, and looked at by 2 Saab dealers and 3 indies -- no fix. The car would cold stall and hesitate occasionally. All issues I figured would work their way out. Then my neighbor who's 9-5 had 75k had to be towed due to a failing DIC, then a week later for a bad converter while the SID display was going out. Then a few weeks later, our 9-3 had to be towed due to a broken fuel pump which caused fuel to spew all over the car's under body (from the top side of the tank) -- with my wife and 2 kids inside! Shortly after the CC fan started to go out, so too did the SID display and then developed some really bad squeaks behind the dash.

Good news is all the above were covered under warrantees. Had they not, in the 18 visits my 9-5 was in it would have been over $4,000, my neighbor's bill from 35-75k miles would have been slightly more and our 9-3 fuel pump visit alone was $850 + the tow. I traded the 9-5 first then the 9-3 just yesterday. Frankly, I just got tired of taking the cars in for repair -- didn't help that the service department here is the worst I've experienced either.

I'm NOT an alarmist and I LOVED having our 2 Saabs -- so much so the first thing I did after buying the 9-5 was bought a second set of Aero wheels; but in the 20 years of driving mostly Nissan, Infiniti, Toyota and Acura I've only had problems like this in a Renault. We did really well with my wife's 9-3 up until 30k, but unfortunately really bad with my 9-5 and so to did my neighbor.

My advice is search this site for reoccurring problems -- DIC, SID, vibrations, blue smoke, etc. Consider an extended bumper to bumper warranty part of the cost. If you want a car to get from A to B you may want to consider another make (I hesitate on this site to say the J-word) but if you want a car which may have a few issues from time to time and like being a Saab driver then go for it ...but look up extended warrantees first.
