I was just checking out a long term test of the 2000 9-5 V6 wagon to realize that the price of that car was as tested, $38,565 with 200hp, auto, non-metallic paint, heated front and rear seats and a the sliding cargo floor. It is pretty impressive that the new 9-5 with auto, non-metallic paint and roof rails (essentially equipped the same as the 2000) is only $37,420.
All the talk of decontenting seems a little dingy when the same (ok their test car had the V6, but still...) essential car is 6 years fresher, yet more than a $1000 less in price. Just had to point it out.
We've all been bashing the new 2006 9-5 so much that we've missed some of the benefits.. not the least of which being 60 additional horse power, better suspension, no charge heated seats, mp3 connection, compass, integrated garage door opener remote, ESP, Harmon-Kardon tuned stereo.. not too shabby. I do think it's time for some obvious things like head protection and to be competitive- AWD, but it's a very complete car against which virtually no other car I can think of can say it's cheaper now than it was 6 years earlier.
