Not so simple!

Chuck Andrews writes in the recent Saab Club magazine that he has found sludge in his 9-5. He uses synthetic oil & changed it every 5K miles. If you don't know Chuck, he has an independant Saab repair / resale shop that he's been running for years. He if anyone should know how to keep the engine sludge free & it snuck up on him.

Frequent - proven - oil changes are a good guideline, but no gtd. I've just bought a 9-5 with frequent oil changes & lots of HWY miles that I am HOPING helped prevent sludge build up, but I am assuming it is probably in there at some level & budgeting for it.

I've heard there is a power engine flush machine that can basically wash out the engine. I'm trying to learn more about that, but it's something I'll probably try in hopes that it helps.

Listen for timing chain rattle, get the car inspected by a dealer if there is one in the area. If there is & they won't let you take it in be very suspect! My only worry about a low mileage car is that it may have never gotten properly warmed up (used locally for short trips) & may actually have a greater likelihood of having sludge starting inside the engine. This is a guess mind you - I'm no expert or even a mechanic.

I think what you want is a car that was clearly well cared for (frequent 3-6K) oil changes, other fluids changed, tires rotated - documented signs the car was well cared for at or better than recommended. Also, some highway miles are good - cars like people need exercise. A low mileage car is nice, should be tighter, & it's problems can likely be corrected more easily (eg: a little bit of sludge instead of a lot of it).

Good luck in your search!
